I've been planning to buy another server, and I just went and priced everything out we're going to need for a second server. It's going to run Windows Server 2008 64-bit, because it fixes alot of the problems with Server 2003 and it needs 64-bit to get past the 4GB RAM limit of 32-bit. Everything will be moved over to the new server slowly, keeping this one up, so there is no noticeable downtime. Due to the new kernel in Windows Server 2008, I need to test compatibility with applications the current server uses, and adjust as necessary. With a Core I7 and 6GB of RAM, this server will be able to handle anything we throw at it, hell, it could probably run 40 L4D servers at once. I have listed the specs below. Donations are greatly appreciated and will get this server up and running faster. Final Build Specs: Operating System: Windows Server 2008 Enterprise 64-bit Processor: Core i7 @ 2.66GHz (Quad Core) Memory: 6GB DDR3 1333 Hard Drives: 2x 640GB 7200 RPM in RAID 1 for Mirroring Hardware: MB + CASE: SUPERMICRO SYS-5016T-TB 1U Barebone Server Intel X58 LGA 1366 Intel Core i7 / Xeon - Retail https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16816101232 Quantity: x1 = $619.99 PROCESSOR: Intel Core i7 920 Nehalem 2.66GHz 4 x 256KB L2 Cache 8MB L3 Cache LGA 1366 130W Quad-Core Processor - Retail https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115202 Quantity: x1 = $279.99 RAM: CORSAIR XMS3 6GB (3 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333 (PC3 10666) Triple Channel Kit Desktop Memory - Retail https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820145220 Quantity: x1 = $114.99 HARD DRIVES: Western Digital Caviar Black WD6401AALS 640GB 7200 RPM 32MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Hard Drive - OEM https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136319 x2 = $139.98 at $69.99 each UPDATE: The new server is setup and running, I just need to move things over to it now and set things up again, more updates to come. So are you buying a new server or upgrading a current one? Why buy a new one? Facewan seem to be a sprawling servertropolis and does not seem to need another server. It's a shame you don't accept cash donations, I got a lot of cash.... Edit - you get the money from those rent-an-admin people right? well it's been a month or so since I read that post when I joined and I thought they pay monthly, so I think you need to update this.
Getting a new server willl allow for ALOT more servers than currently, and will make it a hell of a lot more stable, no more lockups for 5min because i changed the size of my remote desktop session. The money has been getting updated if you look.
I thought it was at the same $600+ mark for the last 2 months, my bad. Well keep up the good work anyway! I hope this server serves you (and the players) well.
We have a vent server, but due to licensing costing SO much it's only an 8 person server. I guess I could rent one, but I'd have to make damn sure it would get used before I pay for it.
is it being used much right now? everytime i play css with my friend, who is now also an admin we use vent to talk.
The main reason is people are too lazy to download it and install, they would rather use ventrilo, which most people have installed already.
